In mid-April, an evening of video and open dialogue was held at the Brown County Library Auditorium downtown. The topic of conversation was Homelessness in our Community: Meeting the Needs of Individuals, Students & Families. We had a nice mix of people in attendance – from the public, to service organizations and schools. Speakers included Dave Pietenpol, Executive Director with EPH, Lisa Merkel, teacher at GB West HS and district expert on student homelessness, Leanne Baeten of St. Johns Shelter and the Micah Center, and Karen Michaels, Executive Director of Golden House and President of Brown County Housing and Homeless Coalition.
We all agreed that the topic of homelessness in our community needs greater attention and further discussion. Look for more forums like this in the future. In the meantime, please stay informed, help as you are able and keep the conversation going. Together we can make continued progress helping the homeless in our community.
